I need everybody to respond to this blog. As some of you may know I am making the Crib for our baby. In settling the final plans and look, Rene' and I have come to a disagreement. So we want the opinion of other people.
On some cribs the side will slide up and down. We are wondering how often this is used. Is this a feature that you love about cribs or something that you really don't care a lot about. We don't know and so if you would leave a comment and tell us how often you use this feature we would appreciate it.

For me--the sliding feature was used A LOT, but only because I am short and otherwise can't get the baby in the crib without falling in myself. But the other handy thing about it is having that whole side come off makes for a handy toddler bed. But I'm pretty sure if you measure and you can both reach, you won't need it. The other thing is maybe you could just make the mattress adjustable so you can have it high when the baby's small and lower when the baby's like 6 mos. old and trying to be a mountain climber, like ours were. :)
I agree with Leslie. I do like the idea of having the sides go up and down, it is so much easier with people who have short arms like us. I would have used a crib more often if I had one that did that, instead we used a bassinett (sp?) and we use it when we go to my parent's house. We just have no room right now for that here or Cassie would be using it right now. I hope this helps some.

We never use ours. The only times I have used it, was to dig a binki out of the crack between the wall and the crib. I am afraid if I use it in front of the kids they will discover how it works, and Avery will try to get Z out of his crib. I don't think it would be a problem not to have it, but as Leslie said, if you want it to be a toddler bed too, then it would be good to have it slide. We never used it as a toddler bed, we just transfered right to a twin bed. So overall, I wouldn't ever use it, but it is more versitle to have one.
Well, personally I use it alot. It makes it easier to get Ryan in and out since he is so big.
Make it Purple, No Pink, No Purple, No Pink, No Purple, Maybe Green, No Pink, Maybe a rainbow of colors.
I actually use ours quite a bit. I like the feature because like Leslie I am on the short end and so to get in and out of the crib it has been quite handy. Also for the first 6+ months I can just leave it down and don't really have to worry that the kids will get out, and then as they learn to stand and climb it is so nice to have it raised so that they are safe.
Our mattress also drops down to make sure that the kids can't climb out when they are older. I liked Leslie's cribs that converted to the toddler beds, we ended up getting a twin bed for Gwen, but I think that the one that Leslie has is so smart, because you don't have to worry about getting a new bed for a few years! A total plus.

Well I have to admit, I did ever use it. I tried once and was so frusterated trying to get it to work, I never tried again. I wouldn't make it able to slide but able to come off when you need a toddler bed.

I think that the height of the mattress in relation to the edge of the crib is very important, but the sliding side is useless. Reason being is if you raise the level of the mattress when the baby can't sit up or roll over it makes it easy to access the baby. But later when the baby can sit up or stand up, there really is no point to the sliding side.
Chris I think that you should ask Rene what she wants. Then you know that you will have done the right thing.
No Pink, or Purple
Being a person of average height, I never used the rail up and down feature. I did use moving the mattress up and down as the child grew and learned to stand, etc.
